Mormonism’s Truth – Spiritual Proof

By | January 25, 2015

This method of proof is not so that a believer can use it to judge non-believers, or so that a non-believer can use it to disprove or invalidate another person’s belief. This is not titled, “How to Prove to Your Mormon Friend that His Religion is False” or “How to Prove to Your Non-Mormon Friend that Mormonism is True.”

If you sincerely want to know that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the restored church of Jesus Christ, then this article is for you. It’s based on my own journey of discovery. This is literally how I found out. It is how millions upon millions have found out throughout generations of time.

This article is meant for you to look inward and prove for yourself. This is the same basic formula for all spiritual knowledge.

Dedicated research and effort + gratitude to God + sincerity of heart + real intent + faith in Jesus Christ + a faithful question = revelation from God. That revelation always comes, but it doesn’t always come immediately. The answer isn’t always given exactly how the inquirer desires, but the answer will come.

If you have practiced this then you know exactly what I’m talking about. God does live and does reach out to ordinary people. He is our Father. He loves us. He is just as eager to bless and guide the most ordinary people in their ordinary lives as He is His chosen prophets in their sacred responsibilities.

No man, woman, or child on this earth has the power to either prove or disprove spiritual truth. Many of us think we are smart enough. We certainly are proud of our scientific information. Yet, for all our advancement we simply do not possess the ability to prove or disprove spiritual truth. God is the source of all truth, and God has revealed the way to know truth. It’s through faith. It’s not through advanced secular education. The Lord teaches us truth through that member of the Godhead we have come to know as the Holy Ghost.

The Holy Ghost is also known by other names, like the Comforter. “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” John 14:26

Do men have a role in helping others to come to a knowledge of the truth? Perhaps, but the truth does not originate from mortal men. It originates from God and is revealed to the honest and humble seeker of truth by the power of the Holy Ghost.

It is not enough to see things with our mortal eyes. Spiritual knowledge requires more than sight. Only the Holy Ghost can “write” the truth on our hearts in a way that goes above and beyond our physical senses.

What Mormonism Claims to Be

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has various grand claims. It claims to be a literal restoration of the same church that Jesus Christ himself organized during his mortal ministry. Ponder that for a moment.

Melchizedek Priesthood Given to Joseph Smith

The Church claims to be Jesus Christ’s literal church and not just some attempt at a copy. It’s not a reformation but a literal restoration. That is bold. It would be dangerous and evil if untrue. If true, then it is the most important thing to know outside of a knowledge of Jesus Christ himself.

The Church claims that after Jesus Christ died, his apostles also later died and His authority to organize and administer through the priesthood was taken from the earth due to a general state of apostasy. Sure, Christianity as a culture continued because many of the writings and teachings survived, albeit not without many changes applied to them over time.

Eventually men began to question the organization and the teachings, especially after the Bible became more widely available for reading beyond those in the employ of the churches.

America is founded largely due to a pursuit of religious freedom. This founding and formation of a land that protected religious freedom gave the setting for the restoration of Jesus Christ’s church in preparation for the Savior’s second coming. That is the claim. If it’s true, it is very important to know and understand.

How then can someone know for sure? God must tell him. How can one expect to get answers from God? By revelation from the Holy Ghost, the same as it has always been throughout scriptural history.

The period of restoration included a new volume of scripture called The Book of Mormon. This book contains a promise at the end that is key to understanding how to know the truth regarding the restoration.

The Book of Mormon Another Testament of Jesus Christ

Moroni 10:3-5 – The Answer

Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.

And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truthof it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.

Read These Things

Step 1 is to read the Book. That is the only way you’ll get to know its teachings, doctrines, and story.

Remember God’s Mercy and Ponder It In Your Heart

Remember God’s mercy. Remember that God has revealed himself to many throughout time in merciful ways to their redemption. Remember that God loves all of His children. Remember that God has all knowledge and all power, both in heaven and in earth. Remember that God loves you.

Ask God, in Christ’s Name, if These Things are Not True

Kneel in prayer and ask God in the name of Jesus Christ whether the book is true. Ask Him whether the peace, comfort, and joy that you have felt while reading the book are from God.

Ask with a Sincere Heart

God requires the sincerity of one’s heart when being approached in prayer.

Ask with Real Intent

God requires that the humble supplicator pray with real intent. Real intent means that you truly intend to follow God’s direction—whatever it is—when He gives it to you.

Ask with Faith in Christ

Ask with faith in Jesus Christ as your savior, your redeemer, and as the God of this world. Believe that Jesus Christ has the power.

God Will Answer

The promise is that God will answer your prayer.

God has revealed Himself to people in the past in various ways. The promise of this book is not that God will give you a glorious vision, although that would not be out of the question. God answers this humble question by the power of the Holy Ghost, so it is important to know how to recognize the Holy Ghost when you receive an answer from God.

Fruits of the Spirit – How to Recognize the Holy Ghost

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance.

Galatians 5:22-23

The Holy Ghost–when He is with you–brings spiritual feelings of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance. God’s answer often comes quietly, yet powerfully.

My Experience

When I read the Book of Mormon with the intent to discover whether or not it truly is a volume of Holy Scripture, I experienced these “fruits of the Spirit” frequently throughout my reading of the book. Before I was even finished, I strongly felt that it was good and of God. When I prayed, I did so with a sincere heart, with real intent, and with faith in Christ.

I tell you now in absolute sincerity that I know that The Book of Mormon is true. I know that God did restore The Church of Jesus Christ. I know that Jesus Christ died for me but was resurrected and lives again. I know he’ll come again. That knowledge came to me via revelation from God by the power of the Holy Ghost.

If You Want to Know

If you want to know if The Book of Mormon is Holy Scripture, now you know how. Pursue this quest without hypocrisy and without ill intent. I know that the humble seeker of truth will come to know that God lives and that Jesus is the Christ. And you will have come to know by faith.

You will know, by the power of the Holy Ghost, that Jesus Christ’s church has indeed been restored and that you can be part of its mission to prepare the people of the world for the second coming of Jesus Christ. And perhaps more importantly, you will have a renewed desire and strength of will to live by Jesus Christ’s teachings.

I love Jesus Christ. I’m not a perfect man, but that’s okay. Because of Jesus Christ, I can be perfected through of His atonement.

Knowledge of the truth is the quest of a lifetime. Pursue it with vigor.
